Building a distributed storage system in my basement Adventures: A Personal Technical Story

My experience implementing Building a distributed storage system in my basement in my homelab - the challenges, solutions, and lessons learned along the way.

The Journey Begins

After weeks of dealing with issues in my automation environment, I decided it was time to tackle Building a distributed storage system in my basement. Little did I know this would become one of my most educational homelab projects.

The Challenges

Getting started was easy enough, but scaling it properly for my environment proved challenging. I learned the hard way that copy-pasting configs from tutorials doesn't always work.

Finding the Right Approach

The breakthrough came when I stopped trying to implement everything at once. I focused on understanding the core concepts first, then built up from there.

Current Status and Takeaways

The implementation is now solid and performs exactly as needed. The experience taught me valuable lessons about patience and methodology. Some key insights from this project:

• Reading documentation thoroughly saves time in the long run

• Start simple and add complexity gradually

• Document your configuration for future reference

• Test changes in isolation before deploying to production

What's Next

I'm planning to expand this setup and integrate it better with my monitoring stack. I'll share more updates as the project evolves.

This is part of my ongoing homelab adventures. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or are working on similar projects!
